Gambling Addiction is Hard to Identify!
First we have to know what is addiction. It is a big issue in present era and most of people are suffering from it. An addiction is nothing but only a psychological craze or dependence towards anything specially any activity. Addiction occurs when someone fails his or her control and continuously by any mean that activity is making some harmful effect to him or her. Accordingly it can take place in anything like drugs, alcohols, food, and sex and when it comes to gambling field; it becomes really a serious issue among the gamblers.
Unlike any other type of addiction this addiction is hard to identify. But generally it is seen when a person experiences win in several gambling and accordingly feels that they cant control their deep impulses to gamble and they can make a nice deal and gain more and more money through that type of activity without facing any trouble, that mainly play role in making addiction towards gambling field. Gambling addiction makes the gambler so impulsive that they can’t give any single thought to be involved again in this activity and in the winning stage the gamblers become so excited with their earnings that they don’t want to quit gambling by any mean. With that they feel their increasing intensity to gambling field. Even sometimes it is found that they are deterred by recurrent losses as they think that they can win again and get their money back. The addicted gamblers forget to think although it is a form of harmless entertainment and fun yet that can become a devastating illness too and can affect them negatively. It can lead the players very badly to big financial problems (when they start to borrow huge amount of money), mental restlessness, relationship stress and many other activities related to their lives.
Thus a recreational sport gambling turns out to be a denting experience to any gambler when he gets addicted to this betting field. Like winning phase and losing (as discussed above) there is also desperation stage which can lead a gambler to get addicted horribly. Keeping hope in mind that they can earn more and more through this betting process and eliminate their losses which they may even face on every alternative day of their playing they become mentally fatigued. Unmanageable state of their increasing debts makes them desperate to face gambling every day. Desperately the gamblers are found engaging in illegal activities to finance their gambling. They may suffer badly by hopelessness, suicidal thoughts, even arrest, divorce and any other drug exploitation. That surely leads to a complete breakdown of an addicted gambler.
Although gambling addiction cannot be identified so easily, there are some signs which can denote that addiction a little bit. That includes constant discussion about gambling, making gambling plan, gambling at any odd time, getting into a long debt circle, giving priority to only gambling not even to personal life and responsibilities and feeing the need to gamble to wipe off any practical issue or stress. It is only a concept but deliberately the sign of addiction is not confined among such behaviors only. There may be many other signs which assign gambling addiction.
There are some treatment programs also for the addicted gamblers. The therapies and medication are supposed to be the most successful way to be cured from this addiction. Counseling with various support groups can also help to remove this type of addiction. But above everything for successful result in this treatment firstly it is required that the addicted person has to admit that he or she is facing restlessness with such type of activity and is feeling to give it up as soon as possible, unless and until the recovery process will not go make any further step.

Start-up to Exit Strategy – Companies Follow a Predictable Development Path
No matter which stage of development your client’s company is in – there are issues requiring your services. You can help them see around the corner ahead – because you know what’s coming. You may be the voice of reason. You may be the outsider they are looking for – no hidden agenda, no ax to grind, no previous advice to protect.
Or are your services no different than your competitors?
Really, why should people do business with you and not one of them? You’ve got to have a very good answer for that, or you are on your way out of business.
In an earlier piece I discussed the importance of finding and owning your niche, your target audience around which you create your unique selling proposition.
That description was based on the principles of psychographic marketing, a strategy of focusing on what your audience has in common, learning everything you can about that commonality, and positioning your solutions around issues that effect each of them.
In another article I described how “Doing It Right” can play an important learning/teaching role, making you feel more at home calling on and selling your services to business owners. I know it works, I published it based on almost three decades of real-life experience.
Here is another way to choose your ideal client type, based on where they are on the curve from start-up to sale or exit strategy.
In the previous article I suggested a ‘vertical’ psychographic process, every prospect being in the same industry for example, an industry you already know something about or have existing credibility in.
Here is another way to look at your target market, one that may help you further identify where you want to work, where your specific knowledge, skill, and abilities will have the greatest impact.
How about working with start-ups?
When businesses are just getting going, everything that each of them does they are doing for the first time. There will always be mistakes when creating business strategies, but at this stage the mistakes can cause the business to fail before it even has a chance.
Perhaps your specialized knowledge, that unique perspective you bring to the equation, is especially suited to helping these entrepreneurs. I know a business coach who has conclusively demonstrated to me his clients and me, that without him, they would fail failed and lost everything.
What have you learned or experienced to date that gives you special insights when working with people at this fragile stage?
Perhaps yours can be the voice of experience, the voice of reason – while their excitement runs from high to low from one minute to the next.
There are three principles for new business failures. How can you help?
One is a lack of experience, can you help them with this? Do you have a coachable point of view worth paying for?
Another is a lack of money, they run out of money before their revenues exceed their expenses. Again, can you help them figure out what’s important to use their limited resources on? Can you help them set priorities, make decisions strategically so they will have a fighting chance to get over the hump?
And finally, the business was a bad idea. You know, “It seemed like a good idea at the time.” Can you be a voice of reason? Your interactions might help them redirect their energies and resources into a more productive venture.
How about working with businesses that have escaped the failure of most entrepreneurs?
This business is a survivor that has beaten the odds, moving from the weekly panic that the payroll will bounce – to one that is looking for more employees, more equipment, and perhaps a more professional management structure.
This business must build on what’s working, focusing on what’s important to their continued growth.
Even though they are successful. seventy-five percent of them will fail to outlive their founder. The average life span of this successful company is 23 years.
Why is that? Maybe they lost their focus, their identity, or their vision. Maybe things were going so well they quit doing them.
Is this a coachable opportunity for you? You bet. They have already demonstrated that they have a viable economic proposition. They did not already go broke like eighty or ninety percent of the other start ups.
If they recognize that you can be part of their turnaround, in your manner, in your attitude, and in your focus on them, they will pay your price. After all, their very life (business and personal) depends on the business and hopefully on you too.
Maybe you can focus of companies that have hit a “flat spot” in their developmental process.
It happens to all successful companies after the making money equation has been figured out, the founders of the business are making more money that they ever thought possible, and they have not yet started thinking about what is going to happen to the company when they are ready to step down.
The people begin to be effected by a sort of malaise, stagnation brought on by no urgent battles to fight.
The business proposition is working just fine thank you very much, often in spite of them. They’re making money, living the good life – but there is a lot of dissatisfaction often under the surface. There’s no joy in the process.
This is where most coaching takes place in business today. Can you see yourself as part of their solution?
Issues such as conflict resolution, executive burnout, lack of motivation, intergenerational conflict, sibling rivalry to name a few.
Opportunities in team building, strategic communications, employee motivation, strategic planning, and on and on.
Maybe you specialize in only one of the above. A place where your specialized knowledge has a maximum value to a group of business owners.
There’s no limit to what you can achieve working with companies in the doldrums!
The Final Frontier! Maybe this is where you will find your niche.
According to a recent Wall Street Journal article, the next ten years will see the largest transition of wealth and management in history.
The gigantic boom that began after WWII in the US and gradually around the world over the last fifty years, those business owners who were successful, outlasted their competition, and got past the “flat-spot” in productivity are now passing the torch to those who follow them.
Is this where you belong? Working with the most wealthy among us.
These successful businesses have only three options available to them. What role can you play in the process?
They can be sold, perhaps to strangers, to investors, or to their competitors wishing to consolidate their position in the industry.
To achieve any of these possibilities successfully requires insights and knowledge not likely to be found internally. Perhaps this is an area of special experience for you?
A second option is that the business can be sold at auction at a drastic discount compared to its value as a going concern.
If this is determined to be the only option, special knowledge, strategies, and techniques may help the business owner make the most of this often very negative situation. Can you add value in this process?
Or the company can continue on in the life of a family member or other insider. This is the preferred option by the vast majority of business owners.
Succession planning in expectation of this option works best when developed over time.
Gauging the commitment of the successor generation, the owners not ready for retirement yet, but are ready to share the management load, or perhaps no one wants to run the place in the next generation. How can you help them uncover what’s important to each of them?
Each business determined to continue beyond the retirement of the founder offer those of you who specialize with them, virtually unlimited opportunities for coaching, training, and mentoring.
And those opportunities are not just for business and executive coaches.
Coaches specializing in pre and post retirement coaching, management, conflict resolution, career coaching, and life coaches will find a fertile field among these wealthy business owners.
I know a life coach who helps high school students whose families own large companies.
Her role is to help them surface their real desires, interests, and aptitudes – so they can move beyond high school toward a productive role in the family business or not.
Her presentations to trade association groups present both sides of the stories, with not a dry eye in the place at the end.
She has all the business she can do working with business owners in a single industry, as well as world of satisfaction helping people see their futures in a positive and exciting light.
My objective here is to help you see your potential prospects from an angle you may not have considered before.
I hope you are making notes and brainstorming with your associates and friends.
I hope you will read all of the articles in this series. I guarantee you that you will be able to come up with a very tight, specific, and accurate description or your ideal client and a very targeted strategy for getting your benefits in front of them.

Lease That New Car First; then Buy it at a Discount at the End of the Lease
Carmakers are offering lease rates can’t be beaten. So lease a car today at these low rates and then buy the car at a discount at the end of the lease. This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.
At the end of a lease the company financially backing the lease most likely will sell the car on the open market at a loss. Why not intervene at that point and buy the car for less than the residual value and put that “loss” into your pocket as money saved?
Because of the oversupply of cars of all kinds, from all manufacturers, it’s likely that rebates and discounts will be offered for several years to come.
Leases are attractive during over production.
To overcome this, leases will also reflect these discounts and end up being “subsidized” for a similar period by increasing the residual value of a car to make the lease price more attractive than a competitor’s offer. This lowers the monthly lease price.
Until labor contracts for the Big Three: GM, Ford, and Chrysler, can be significantly reduced, they have no choice but to continue subsidizing leases in order to spur sales. This is once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to minimize the cost of a new car by leasing it first, and then buying it at the end of the lease.
New cars will continue being a bargain.
In the past, the auto manufacturers moved cars by subsidizing leases. The monthly lease cost was lowered by increasing the residual value, thereby selling (leasing) more cars. But the value of the vehicle at the end of the lease was almost always less than the contracted residual and each of the off-lease cars then had to be sold in the wholesale market at a loss of several thousand dollars.
This means that at the end of the lease its used car value may also be less than the market value. It is unlikely it will ever be more. That is the time to buy the car at a discount from the contracted residual value.
Several of the big backers of lease financing, Chrysler, some New York banks, and others, each lost several hundred million dollars in each of the past several years because they had to sell the off-lease cars on the open market for less than the residual value.
Future trends favor the consumer
The Automotive industry is saddled with excessive employee benefits, i.e. health and welfare and pension obligations for current and retired employees. Worse, there are too many plants worldwide making vehicles.
If China’s car industry enters the United States in three or four years with the “Cherry” automobile, a talked about vehicle made in China with Chinese wages, the situation will only get worse.
Compounding the problem for some of the manufacturers is that their labor contracts are so juicy that they are better off continuing to give away cars rather than to close a plant continuing to pay benefits to laid off employees.
This situation will not change for several years until consolidation, plant closings, or bankruptcies have cured the problem. And plant closings will be a last resort. Therefore the glut of new cars will likely continue for a few years and the subsidized lease will continue to be offered.
A true-life example:
A business friend of mine had a three-year-old leased car with a contract residual value of $28,000. Looking at the used car lot he found he could buy one just like it for $24,000. He assumed the company that financed the lease would loose at least $2,000 in selling it. Through the dealer he offered $22,000 to buy the car and his offer was promptly accepted, including 3%, 3 year financing. His dealings, all by phone (no face to face negotiations needed) were with the company financing the lease.
So lease the car of your dreams today if you ultimately want to buy it. Let the companies financing the lease continue to subsidize your monthly lease payment. About three months before the end of the lease, cruise the used car lots and notice what your car is being offered at and then buy the car (no commissions paid to anyone on this transaction) at the end of the lease and keep several thousand dollars in your pocket.

The Reason Why Paid Survey Sites Multiply Faster Than Bacteria
Imagine if you could make a dollar every time you handed someone a special sheet of paper. To earn the dollar, all you’d have to do is get people to read that sheet of paper.
Normally, you’d think making money in this fashion would be the greatest thing since sliced bread. However, you’d soon find out that you’d have a very big problem on your hands: copycats.
Generate a lot of cash for yourself and people will no doubt take notice. Not only will they copy your business model, but they will do anything they can do make their business look good while making yours look bad.
Enter the infamous paid survey site. Websites that claim you can make big bucks by taking a few surveys online every now and then.
It wasn’t long ago when I first saw one of these sites and thought to myself: “Wow, what a great way to make a little extra cash for myself.”
Little did I know, this was just one of a million other survey sites out there basically offering the same type of deal. I was under the impression that the site I joined was reputable and unique.
That couldn’t be further from the truth. Hundreds, if not thousands of these paid survey sites exist. Unfortunately 99% of them are exactly the same.
Why so many clones you ask? It’s because paid survey sites are similar to the “sheet of paper” example that I mentioned early. Paid survey sites are a profitable business, and they’re incredibly easy to copy.
Let’s take an example:
Joe spends a Sunday afternoon surfing the web and stumbles across a paid survey site. He reads that he can get paid for his opinion by taking surveys online. All he has to do is pay an upfront membership fee to access the database of companies that send out the surveys.
Joe signs up, pays the membership fee, takes a few surveys and makes a few extra bucks. Joe then becomes aware that this paid survey site business model works like a charm. It was able to convince him to pay to access the directory, so why wouldn’t it be able to convince other people?
Joe then decides to create a survey site of his own. He already has the big list of survey companies from the site he joined prior. The only thing he has to do is register a domain name, purchase a web host, throw together a page and voila: a new paid survey site is born!
So now, not only does Joe receive money from the surveys he’s taking, but also from the upfront membership fee he charges his visitors to access the exact same list of survey companies that got him started in the first place!
Each person that signs up at Joe’s new website represents yet another chance that he or she will take notice of this survey site business model and create one themselves.
Thus you can see just how quickly these types of sites are copied. They really do multiply faster than bacteria!
But what does this mean for you?
Well, quite frankly, you’re getting ripped off. Not only are these paid survey sites copycats of one another, the list of companies that they charge you for is actually available for free!
Yes, you read that right. These survey companies are not top secret classified C.I.A documents. They’re all out there on the web to be found. They’re just looking to do market research and they need help from people like you to give opinions on their products.
The trouble lies in knowing where to find these companies. That’s the relief these paid survey sites provide. Upon paying the membership fee, you are given access to a huge, neatly organized list of companies that send out the surveys.
But I’d wager you’d have a grumbling feeling inside your stomach knowing you’re paying for something that you know is freely available. Am I right?
Those were my feelings as well, so I decide to do some legwork and create a website listing some of the top survey companies without charging a fee upfront to access them.
After all, not everyone wants to be known as bacteria.
For over three years, Michael Hole has been an online entrepreneur and is the creator of several websites, including one of the best sources to find free listings of paid survey companies: www.WealthBySurveys.com
Home Business System
Are you good with computers and considering a home business where you can utilize your computer knowledge? You may be interested in starting a computer tech business from home offering support to the millions of Americans who own computers but often times become very frustrated with them.
If you are planning this type of business with your spouse and have children carefully, consider this venture before stepping into it. You will need to be able to manage your time and have an excellent ability to communicate to each other. You do not want your partnership to turn into a power struggle or both your marriage and business can become at risk of falling apart. Starting a home business takes investment both financially and emotionally so weigh your options carefully before jumping into the arena of home-based businesses.
It will be important to divide the responsibilities within the business. Look at the strengths that both of you have and divide them up that way. If both you and your spouse have great skills, when it comes to working with clients, one of you may prefer to do a different part of the business. Your business will succeed when you work together utilizing each other’s strengths as opposed to getting into a power struggle over who should work in which area of the business. Just as in a corporate environment, you have those who work in the forefront working with the customers and managing the day-to-day operations and another who work behind the scene generating the paperwork, payroll, and other office duties. Any large financial decisions should always be made together.
You do not want to be screaming at each other when differences arise so decide on a plan as to how you are going to handle disputes that arise and they do arise in all businesses. Again look at how businesses are run, have weekly meetings or even morning daily meetings to look at what you are going to accomplish that day. If you start your business but never, take time to communicate with each other as to what is happening your business will fail. Having weekly or daily meetings will lessen the chance of something happening that is unexpected and you will be more able to handle the little things that crop up.
If you have, children in the home consider hiring someone to come in and take care of the kids while you are working. It does not have to be all day but maybe for a few select hours when you know that you and your spouse need to concentrate without interruptions. Although one of the reasons you probably wanted to start a home business is so that you can be home with your children you will not be very effective if they are demanding your attention all day. Your children will have to adjust to the business being in your home the same way you and your spouse are adjusting.

Stop Smoking – A Few Tips
Many people have tried to quit smoking and failed. What most of them don’t know that most smokers will fail several times before they quit completely. There have been many studies that have shown that cigarette smoking is as hard to break as a cocaine addiction. Some people have found it beneficial admitting to themselves that they are powerless over nicotine, before starting their journey to quitting smoking. If you admit that you are now smoking because you are addicted and not because it is a personal choice may help motivate you to making the next steps to quitting smoking.
Surprisingly about eighty percent of people try to quit smoke without help. Ninety five percent of those people fail. So getting help to quit smoking is a must. Do not try to do it by yourself. Seek help with programs and there are even meetings for people who are trying to quit smoking to help give you support. Find a program that may work for you, better yet find two or more. You can use a combination of programs. You can place a call to your local American Cancer Society and get a list of inexpensive mainstream programs. There are over the counter nicotine replacement methods that you can use such as nicotine gum and the patch. You could get a prescription for the nicotine inhaler or Zyban. You should buy a quit smoking book and audio tapes to listen to on the way to work. Some work places offer you a reward for quitting smoking. So not only do you save money you may get money as well.
A lot of people who have quit smoking claim that learning to take slow deep breaths were a very important technique to learn. Essentially every time you want a cigarette, you take a deep long breath and then very slowly exhale. If you purse you lips it will force you air to come out more slowly. When you exhale try to imagine all the tension coming out of you body and let you chin fall to your chest. Let the tension just flow out. You also need to remember the urge for a cigarette lasts for about five minutes. So if you get the strong urge to smoke, practice your breathing and tell yourself that you can make it through these five minutes. Then it will be better.
You will need to drink lots of water for the first few days to flush all the nicotine and toxins out of your body. Stay away from coffee, alcohol and high calorie snacks, these can trigger a craving for a cigarette. Some people find it helpful to find a substitute for their cigarette such as gum, lollipops, cinnamon sticks and hard candy. It may be helpful to change your normal routine. Take a walk or go to the gym during lunch or breaks. Please do not forget to ask for support form family, friend and co-workers. That way they know you are trying to quit and understand if you are a little grumpy! Do not be afraid to ask people around you not to smoke. This may be more important than you realize.
It will be helpful to write down ten things about being a non-smoker and then ten things bad about smoking. It really helps. It will also help if you reaffirm to yourself that you are a non-smoker, not a smoker who isn’t smoking at the moment. Repeat to yourself all day that you are a non-smoker. It is ok to grieve about quitting smoking. Your body has been programmed that smoking made you feel good. You will miss it in the beginning; it is okay to feel that grief.

This Here Web Ain’t Big Enough For Both Of Us! Can You Corner Web Market Share With Negative Action
If you’re a fan of Western movies I’m sure you’ve heard most
of the title line before; just replace “Web” with “town.”
That line of dialog is offered right before the two cowboys
go outside and have a deadly gun duel. Wind blown
tumbleweeds and shades of the OK Corral as a backdrop!
Nevertheless, can mean spirited politics help you corral a
little corner of the Web? Can you put up no trespassing
signs on what you’ve deemed to call your own?
Most progressive Net businesses grab market share by their
good business practices and excellent customer service.
There’s more than a few of those that come to mind. There
are others – less enlightened – that use negative practices
to maintain their market foothold.
Creative ways to slow down or stop your perceived
competitors or opponents are many. They can take the form
of misinformation, gossip, poisonous tips, setting up dummy
email accounts to spread rumors, etc, etc
A few of them will work in the short term. Some will be more
effective than others. Most will stain your personal and
business name, when found out! All of them are foolhardy!
Yes, you can raise your hand to the sky and block the sun;
yet and still, it’s not an accurate description of what’s
happening. When the mighty Mississippi river wants to change
course, how can it be stopped? When the Net wants to grow,
expand and mutate, how are you going to tame it to your
petty designs?
Entire countries have bent to the will of the Web! Here’s an
example: Long-standing phone monopolies in Central American
countries used political pressure to stop their citizens
from making Internet phone calls, to no avail!
Though “special legislation” was passed, there was such a
huge outcry from the rest of the Net, they relented!
Let the Net be the Net, is the call of wisdom.
Historically speaking, the Web is an infant. It will
continue to grow and expand, networking even the most remote
outpost or village! Powerful and speedy microchips will give
us the ability to reach out to other people and cultures.
Language barriers will be eliminated with real-time, two way
translation. Stone Age villages are going to join the modern
world in one fantastic step!
The swift technological change and the accelerated rate of
deployment promise a bumpy ride, to say the least!
All we can do is grab the beast by the tail and hang on;
uncertain as to where it leads and what it will look like!
Those are just a few of the things awaiting us, in the
not-too-distant future. I’m sure there are many more in store;
not imagined, unseen and unexpected. The only two constant
factors are: growth and change! In its tender years, the Net
has grown and mutated in ways barely imagined a decade ago.
If I’ve waxed too fantastically in the preceding paragraphs,
I do apologize! The point is to explain the utter futility
of arresting or trapping a corner of the Web! By its very
nature it’s the agent of revolutionary change and growth;
never to be proclaimed as your self-appointed kingdom!
It won’t work!
All Internet Marketers should consider the preceding when
making policy decisions that deal with perceived
competitors. Notice my usage of the word “perceived.”
Just because an upstart business wants some of the turf you
formerly called your own, is no reason to engage in
attrition and trench warfare.
These are much better options:
(a) Find weak areas in your competitor’s business. Not so
much for the purpose of exploiting them, but to see if you
can supply some of their needs. No matter what the
copywriters say, all businesses have strong and weak areas.
(b) Look for product lines that are complementary and form
linking relationships.
The nature and placement of the link will insure mutual
benefit from the agreement.
(c) When provoked by some of the negative practices of other
- less progressive – competitors, do what you must to uphold
your reputation. If it’s something trivial and small, turn
the other cheek and seek the high road; not from altruism
but to save your time, energy and attention for more
productive endeavors. Pick your battles on principle and only
when all other avenues are exhausted.
When all things are considered, the best use of your time in
maintaining market share should be spent in finding new
resources and partners. Likewise, implementing new content
delivery technology will prove very effective. By all means,
every possible effort should be made to convert competitors
into friends and partners.
The alternative is so unsavory:
While the Web continues its relentless gallop, leaving both
you and your sparring partner in the dust; will you even
recognize why you went into battle, in the first place?

Key to Success: “Good is the Enemy of Great”
First off, I would echo the voice of 18th century French philosopher Voltaire, made popular and relevant in today’s leadership lexicon by “Good to Great” author Jim Collins, who said, “Good is the Enemy of Great.”
1. “Good is the Enemy of Great.” Get rid of the good to make room for the great in your life. Instead of keeping the main thing the main thing, we major in too many minor things. In other words, many people do a few things that are good, a lot of things that are mediocre, but nothing that is GREAT.
Find the ONE thing you can be the best in the world at and focus unrelentingly on improving that one thing, polishing it to perfection.
Choose great over good in ALL areas of your life! It is far better to have a few great things than a lot of good or mediocre things.
Instead of having six cheap shirts that you don’t feel so great in, have one fine quality shirt that you can feel proud to wear and that makes you feel like a million bucks! Instead of having five or six ho-hum paintings to decorate your walls, invest in ONE magnificent masterpiece that leaves you breathless and enriches your soul every time you look at it! Instead of going to the usual cottage retreat every long-weekend, save up your money and go on one GREAT vacation that you’ve always dreamed of like going on a European boat-cruise, snorkeling in the Red Sea, or taking an art class in Paris. Instead of many mediocre friendships, have a few great friendships that energize and inspire you and that you can spend quality time fostering deeper
relationships. You get the point.
Greatness is a choice! And choice is the democratic equalizer of all people. Everyone, regardless of their rank, social status or income level has the power to choose great over good.
2. Commit to an annual theme. Instead of making and breaking a number of well-wished but half-hearted New Year’s Resolutions, commit to an annual or lifetime theme. Pick a theme that defines your singular life purpose or what you are most passionate about and stick to it.
For example, my theme is: “Write First!” I have this theme posted right in front of me above my computer. My purpose is to write.
I write first and ask questions later. I focus on writing (or things related to developing my writing) first and then worry about the urgent but non-important interruptions (paying bills, answering calls and emails, responding to invitations, etc.) that plague everyone. This theme takes precedence over everything else except my spiritual relationship with my Creator. The only exception to this rule would be a genuinely important priority that falls in one of my top values in life or attending to a family emergency.
Your main theme for 2006 could be “Family First!” or “Health First!” or “Listen First!” or “Service Above Self.” Just pick one and commit to it.
Beside your main theme, make a list of your top values such as love, health, giving, peace, wealth, etc. to ground yourself and distinguish between important and non-important but urgent matters. In his autobiography, Benjamin Franklin listed thirteen virtues (Temperance, Silence, Order, Resolution, Frugality, Industry, Sincerity, Justice, Moderation, Cleanliness, Tranquility, Chastity, and Humility) to which he governed his life and gave a week’s strict attention to mastering one virtue at a time repeating the list in order every thirteen weeks.
3. Practice a policy of planned neglect. In other words, once you have established your theme or singular purpose (the one thing you can be the best in the world at) get into the habit of practicing your main habit FIRST before anything else.
Everything else that’s non-important can get neglected and keep getting put-off. In other words, your daily to-do list will keep changing around your main theme which will remain constant – with very few exceptions.
4. Make a stop doing list. I’m not sure where I first heard this idea, but I borrowed it most recently from Jim Collin’s book, “Good to Great.” Too many people have important to-do lists that keep getting longer and longer. But very few people have ’stop-doing’ lists. Make a list of everything you are doing that is not contributing to your core genius or main purpose and core values – and stop doing it! Forget about your image and what other people will think, and STOP doing what’s not great in your life.
5. Be Simple. Get rid of the good to make room for the great. Literally! Get rid of the junk in your basement and file folders!
Anything you haven’t touched or looked at in a year you probably need to get rid of it. Donate books and magazines you haven’t read and clothes you know you’re never going to wear. Empty your mind and physical space of unnecessary clutter and make room for abundance! (Daily meditation is a great way to empty the mind and allow new inspiration).
6. Make HEALTH a priority NOW! Get a full physical check-up at least once a year. If something’s bothering you or you don’t feel right about something, get it checked out IMMEDIATELY! Don’t wait, until it’s too late. Take a proactive approach to your health by taking preventative measures, eating healthy and exercising regularly. And make LOVE a top priority. If you haven’t taken the time to tell your loved ones how deeply you value and love them, then make time for it now.
Are you still reading this article? WHY? Pick-up your phone, right now, and call your doctor to make that appointment! Call your loved ones now and book some real quality time together. Life is short and fragile. You may never get the chance again.
7. Dreams. The dream is a window into your soul, a gateway into the unseen world, giving access to the unknown and revealing the invisible behind all that is visible. In my book, “Psychology of the Hero Soul,”
(http://www.herosoul.com; Chapter 14; pg. 77)I mention the importance of dreams and how to harness your dreams to awaken your creative potential. I can’t stress enough how important it is to get into the habit of jotting down your dreams and making an effort to interpret them. It is a great way to develop self-awareness and self-understanding and will enrich your life in many, many unforeseen ways.
Self-awareness and self-acceptance is so important in developing your self-esteem. Take the time to seriously ask yourself, “Who am I and what’s my purpose in life?” Write down your strengths and weakness, your highest ambitions and deepest fears, and make a list of everything you enjoy doing and all your hobbies. Take some personality tests to gain deeper understanding of who you are.
8. Face the brutal facts! Never hide from reality. Always get the hard facts about any situation you are facing. It doesn’t matter if you have a Harvard MBA and are the world’s greatest optimist if you pick the wrong location to open up a retail business!
Likewise, face the brutal facts about yourself. If you haven’t even come close to achieving your dreams and goals, you need to honestly ask yourself why you haven’t reached your goals and figure out what has been preventing you. A great way to accomplish this is to ask a few friends you trust and who know you the following question: “How do you see me limiting myself?” (I have Jack Canfield to thank for this great question).
Once you have the facts and fully understand the problem, spend over eighty percent of your time focusing on the solution.
9. ASK for help! If you need help, ask for it. If you don’t ask, you don’t get. Ask for the sale, ask for the date, ask for support. Stop worrying about your image, reject the rejection, and ASK!
But don’t just be a taker. Please also give. Earn the right to ask by being a giver. Be a generous giver because whatever you put out into the world will return multiplied. The hero’s journey is about following your bliss, and doing what you love to do in service to others. “Service above self,” is a great motto to adopt.
10. Take Action! In my Hero Soul book, I have dedicated an entire chapter on taking action. The great succeed by taking continuous and concerted action toward a singular objective. And they continue to take unrelenting, consistent action for a period of years before becoming overnight successes.
If you do just five new things every day towards achieving your biggest dream, you will one day be living your dream and as Thoreau once said, ‘meet with a success unexpected in common hours.’
But if you aren’t going to take action on the advice in this article, why the heck are you reading it? Move on to something else!
One of my favorite movies is “The Shawshank Redemption” (based on Stephen King’s short story, Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption) about a successful banker, Andy Dufresne, who is convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of his wife. I’m sure many of you have seen it.
For nineteen years Dufresne quietly chips away at his goal to escape by literally chipping the wall in his cell – a little bit every day – until one day he reaches his goal and escapes.
His jail buddy, Red, comments that all it took “was pressure and time.”
I don’t think I’ve ever seen any movie replayed so many times on TV. It really intrigued me. So I did some research and found out that according to IMDB, The Shawshank Redemption is the second most popular movie of all time with The Godfather taking first place! That’s quite the accomplishment given how long The Godfather has been out.
Why is this movie so popular? I don’t really know the answer. But I think it’s because many people feel like they’re living in a prison and have been given a life sentence to doing work they really hate. They want to break free from their shackles.
More than anything else, they want FREEDOM! And Shawshank delivers that moment of freedom. It’s a beautiful story that makes the soul weep with joy and provides the hope and promise of being human.
The great thing about Shawshank is that it also provides a solution: by quietly chipping away at your main goal and consistently taking action everyday, you will achieve the success and freedom you have been longing for. With ‘pressure and time’ you can take the darkest coal and turn it into the most brilliant, most magnificent diamond the world has ever seen.

Promotional Software For Marketing Your Business
For many business owners, the process of balancing resources for reaching existing customers and attracting new business can be a difficult task. Advertising business services and products can be done by direct marketing, television, radio, newspapers, magazines, internet sites, mail, promotional giveaways, and more. No matter how your business implements its marketing strategy, the purpose behind all the methods used is to stay connected to the people who purchase your products, and to increase public awareness based on what your company can afford to spend.
Problems with using mass media approaches are in the level of noise and expense your business will have to fight its way though to capture attention. Placing adds in newspapers, television advertisements, and other forms of mass advertising can lead to high costs with ineffective results. That is why it is called mass media; you have to do a lot of it to reach the people you want to target. Despite these problems, mass media can work well for some, if you have a big enough budget, good advertising copy, and the ability to reach enough people to build interest in what you have to sell. Since everyone likes to get free stuff, adding the right promotional items to the mix can help to augment your advertising dollars, and give you a means for allowing your customers to help advertise your business for you. Traditional promotional items include things like shirts, cups, pens, hats, bumper stickers, and other inexpensive giveaway items. These are things that you can give customers when they visit your business, or let your sales force leave at the site when calling on your customers.
In recent years, more companies have rushed to become part of the potential represented by marketing on the internet. With this media, some interesting and quite irritating new approaches began to surface. The phenomenon of mass emailing quickly turned into an unrelenting sea of spam advertising, gaudy banner ads, spyware, annoying pop up ads, site linking, and expensive pay per click search engine advertising aimed at ushering people to buy products and services on otherwise invisible web site locations. The internet developed more noise, faster than any other form of traditional marketing media. For the internet, powerful search engine companies rose to become the undisputed brokers for doing business successfully. The overwhelming focus of all the new techniques associated with the internet involve finding the best way to obtain the coveted front page position of a search engine query for whatever information people are trying to find.
Strangely enough, it is sometimes easier to draw attention to your web services by using off line advertising than it is to struggle through the shifting sands of on line techniques. This fact points to an interesting dilemma about the means customers use to stay connected with companies doing business on the internet. If they can get to your site when they want what you have to offer, the strength of your information and services will provide the sales, but getting them there is a convoluted, hard to manage, and expensive process in itself. There may be millions of people cruising the internet 24 hours a day, but it does you no good at all if they are all looking somewhere else for what you have to give.
Using my own perspective on traditional and new marketing techniques, I started thinking about ways to reduce the distraction and expense of using mass media, capture the benefits of promotional items, stay connected with existing customers, provide a means to capture new business, and overcome some of the problems associated with connecting customers to internet based business information. The new approach also had to incorporate techniques that would be appealing for people to use without annoying them with unwanted information explosions.
The solution I devised from these objectives came in the form of several different iterations of desktop software applications. These programs start by providing users with appealing utility, that keeps them engaged with using the product. Much like a promotional item, people like getting free software, and are significantly more likely to try a new program than they are to read a direct mail letter. Even if they eventually lose interest in the program’s functional utility, chances are they will be exposed to this media multiple times before they stop using it, and will continue to access it for the information it contains. These utilities come loaded with access to data about my products and services, using a direct and instant connection to my web based information on demand. The program has both static information I want my customers to have, while also connecting them to the variable and changing information available on the web.
Customers get the data they want, when they want to look at it, without having to use a search engine to find it. This method provides a direct conduit to me, without having to deal with filtering through the distraction of competitors clamoring for attention. Whenever a customer or potential customer needs something from me, I am always a few clicks away from providing it for them. With a license to freely copy the software, I am empowering customers to bring me new business by offering copies of the program to their friends. The costs of producing this media can be significantly less than the price of mounting a single mass media campaign, and I can distribute it in a variety of hard copy and electronic formats. In putting these methods to the test, I found that people who do not own computers themselves will distribute the software to friends who do have computers.
Though we offer full support for the software, the programs have been so easy to use and stable, we have not received any calls for support. From our controlled distribution monitoring, we have seen customers using the software to access our web based information long after receiving a copy of the utility. With the ability to add new utility ideas to our offerings, this new approach has proven to be a successful addition to our marketing mix, achieving all the objectives we set in creating it.
