The Sunday times Redesign

Readership is set to ascend upon The Sunday Times’ recent move to redesign itself. News International, its parent company, has invested £650m for the redesign.

For the first time in its 186-year existence, this popular UK newspaper will be fully colored. Management probably realized that a dearth of color would hold the paper back in the race with television and emerging media.

Color aside, the paper will put on a new masthead. All texts will be in a new bespoke typeface, called Sunday Times Modern. Al Trivino, News International art director, was at the helm of the redesign.

Not any less pleasing is the content itself. As connoted by its latest slogan, “For all you are,” The Sunday Times likes to think it has a multi-faceted audience, from culture vultures to sports fanatics. On top of 12 sections, the paper will add features like “Little Britain” and “Blog of the Week.”

News International’s investment also funds the establishment of new presses, which will allow the Sunday Times to be printed in two runs every Saturday.

Featuring actor Peter O’Toole, the brand marketing campaign alone requires £3m. It is the first major marketing campaign undertaken by News International in nine years. Last time it did, it declared, “The Sunday Times is the Sunday Papers”.

Peter O’Toole must have a great talent fee, in that £3m is quite an amount to lavish on newspaper marketing campaigns. But then again, spending is an unavoidable recourse for a newspaper to stay relevant in the digital era.

Ontario – The Legends of a Giant and a Princess

The Ojibway Indians of northwestern Ontario have many legends. These are two of the best still told to this day.

Known as the Niagara of the North, Kakabeka Falls is one of the gems of natural scenery in Northwestern Ontario. The falls, whose name is an Ojibway Indian word meaning “thundering water” is on the Kaministiquia River and are a result of massive waterflow from retreating glaciers over 8,000 years ago. The water plunges 128 feet over sheer cliffs and some of the oldest fossils in the world. You can get a bird’s-eye view from jutting platforms and trails along the gorge and trace voyageurs’ steps around the falls in this history-rich park.

The falls are at the center of one of the most enchanting of Indian legends. It is the story of the Indian princess “Greenmantle”.

The old, peace-loving chieftain, White Bear of the Objibway encampment, learned the Sioux were about to attack his tribe. His daughter, Princess Greenmantle devised a plan to protect her aging father and her tribe.

She paddled her canoe up the Kaministiquia River to a point well above the waterfall and walked boldly into the camp of her enemies. They captured her at once and intended to put her to death. Pretending to be lost and frightened, she bargained with them to spare her life in return for leading them to her father’s camp. The Sioux agreed.

The following morning the young Princess was placed in the lead canoe and the great band of Sioux, with their canoes tied together, set out for the Ojibway camp. Greenmantle did not tell them of the falls and as they swiftly turned the river bend, they plunged into the great gorge.

Along with the Sioux warriors, the Princess lost her life. Her life was not lost in vain because her tribe was spared the torture of the most feared of tribes. The Great Manitou looked kindly upon the brave deed of the Princess. Today, the figure of Greenmantle can be seen, in the mist of the falls, standing as a monument to the memory of the courageous Princess who gave her life for her people.

Standing on the shores of Thunder Bay at the head of the great Lake Superior, one can perceive, on looking out across the waters of Thunder Bay, a great land formation situated directly in the mouth of the Bay. It requires no imagination at all to see that this form resembles the sleeping body of a giant, arms folded across his massive chest as in the majesty of death.

On an island just outside Thunder Bay, now known as “Isle Royale”, once lived a great tribe of Ojibway natives. Because of their loyalty to their gods and their peaceful and industrious mode of living, Nanabijou, the spirit of the Deep Sea Water, decided to reward them. One day he called their chief to his great Thunder Temple on the mountain and told the Chief that if he told anyone outside the Ojibway tribe the secret he was going to share with him, that he, Nanabijou, would be turned to stone and the Ojibway tribe would perish.

The chief gave his promise and Nanabijou told him of the rich silver mine, now known as “Silver Islet”. He told the chief to go to the highest point on Thunder Cape and there he would find an entrance to a cave that would lead him to the center of the mother lode of silver. Apparently the chief and his people found the mine, for the Ojibway soon became famous for their beautiful silver ornaments. So beautiful were they, that the Sioux warriors, on seeing them on their wounded enemies, tried to get the secret from them. However torture and even death failed to make the Ojibway divulge the secret of the source of their silver, so the Sioux had to come up with another plan.

One day their most cunning scout devised a plan and volunteered to carry it out. The scout was to enter the Ojibway camp disguised as one of them. This he did and in a few days he succeeded in learning the secret of the island of silver. Going to the mine at night he took as many large pieces of the precious metal he could carry in order to prove to his chief that he had fulfilled his mission.

However, as he paddled his canoe across the water to the Sioux encampment, a terrific storm broke over the Cape. Because of the extra weight of all the silver he had stolen, the scout’s canoe was swamped in the storm and broke up, with the scout drowning.

Next day after the storm had cleared; the most extraordinary sight appeared. Where once was a wide opening to the bay, now lay what appeared to be a great sleeping figure of a man. Nanabijou’s warning had been fulfilled and he had been turned to stone.

On a little island at the foot of the Sleeping Giant, can still be seen the partly submerged shafts of what was once the richest silver mine in the northwest. White men have tried again and again to pump out the water that keeps flooding in from Lake Superior but without success. Is it still under the curse of Nanabijou, Spirit of the Deep Sea Water? Perhaps, who can tell, but the Ojibways will tell you it is indeed the revenge of Nanabijou.

Halloween Everyday: The Mask of “I’ve Got It All Together”

The mask of “I’ve Got It All Together” is one of the most popular masks that we tend to wear.

It’s so easy to put this mask on, and then forget you are wearing it. We want to look to the outside world as if everything is fine, we’ve got it all handled, no problems, thank you very much.

This one weighs a lot, and is very heavy to carry around. Even worse, it makes it very hard to ask for help.

Putting this one on

The only reason for putting on the IGIAT (I’ve Got It All Together) mask is in a misguided attempt to deal with our own insecurity.

Some people raise this to the level of perfectionism and are mortified at any little crack in the image.

Putting this mask on others

Another way this mask shows up in our lives is when we put it on someone else. Someone may appear to us as if they have it all together so we label them that way.

Believe me, 25 years of working with people’s struggles tells me that every one of us struggles in some way, many times hurting in the same places as everyone else.

Alternatives to the mask

Take a chance and take it off. Take it all off. The mask, that is. Many times, demonstrating to others that we are human can be quite endearing. Perfectionist tend to push people away.

I’m not suggesting being careless or irresponsible. I am encouraging being a real live human being, warts and all.

Snowboarding Reductions Can Be Had because of the Financial Crisis

With the pound fetching a little less than a Euro at currency exchanges, one would reckon there would be a lot of real ski deals to be booked in alpine ski resorts this ski season as potential skiers stick back home to beat the recession. Provisional numbers just now published show that ski resorts are 89 percent booked during the Christmas period. 11 % higher than the identical period last year.

One will have more chance in Jan that currently has a 33 % reserve rate. The signs of a recession is during the significant Feb ski vacation month which has 66 % reservations, 2 percent less than last season. Reservation desks in the ski domains of Alpe d Huez, Gourette, Tignes-les-Brevieres and Verchaix have noted heavy reservations during December boosted by the fantastic early winter season snows. Les Arcs has better bookings than last year, and La Grave enjoyed a superb Xmas.

But there is strong requirement for larger self catered chalets, 6 to 12 spaces, as folk group-up to save money. Early evidence highlights that do it yourself snowboarding holidays are holding up, evidence perhaps that earnest boarders will not sacrifice their ski trip to the mountains. However inquiries for package holidays are down on last year.

Travel Europe with Low Airfares

Europe has always been a desirable vacation destination. No matter what your interests are, Europe has something to offer. If museums are your thing, France leads that pack, although the Guggenheim in Bilbao, Spain is a must-see for art aficionados. Italy offers the culinary delights of Tuscany and the unparalleled atmosphere of the Grand Canal in Venice. Switzerland, Italy, and France provide winter sports enthusiasts with the best in Alpine skiing. To travel Europe is to travel in time, from ancient Roman ruins to the hottest nightclubs in Paris.

For many people, to travel Africa means exploring the great savannahs. Going on safari is a once-in-a-lifetime experience, filled with unimaginable beauty and the opportunity to see exotic animals in their natural habitats. Similarly, Westerners can travel Asia to immerse themselves in cultures vastly different from their own. The contrasts that Asian destinations provide – from the bustling metropolis that is Hong Kong and the high-tech Tokyo to the rural areas of Thailand and Vietnam – challenge and delight the senses.

Even as recently as twenty years ago, if you wished to travel Europe, travel Asia, or travel Africa, it would have been a pipe dream or one that required you to spend a lifetime’s worth of savings. Today’s global economy, however, translates into multi-city cheap tickets that can turn virtually anyone into a continent-hopping frequent flyer.

The Internet, of course, is the key to booking cheap tickets. Although individual airlines sometimes offer specials in international travel, third party companies are often the place to turn for cheap tickets. Their proprietary search technology allows them to link to dozens and dozens of airlines, and scour airfares at the lowest possible cost.

Once you’ve made the decision to undertake the adventure of a multi-city trip and travel Europe, travel Asia, or travel Africa, it’s time to book your airfare. The best approach to securing cheap tickets is flexibility. The more flexibility you have in your travel dates and in your destinations, the more likely you are to find the cheap tickets you desire.

With enough flexibility, you can even take a trip around the world for the cost of a single round trip airfare with a traditional carrier. Why not start at a major airline hub close to home, and see where your adventure takes you? Instead of having your heart set on flying from New York City to Paris, why not go from New York to Zurich, and then book a short flight on a smaller airline from Zurich to Paris? Small airlines often offer cheap tickets without a penalty for a one-way ticket.

If you want to see the world, you should make sure to pack a sense of adventure. That, combined with excellent Internet sleuthing skills, can make your travel dreams a reality.

Visit to Labadee in Haiti

The first port for our Royal Caribbean cruise of the western Caribbean was Labadee, Hispaniola which is actually a part of Haiti. This specific port is leased out to Royal Caribbean so only their cruiseships come here. Labadee is actually a peninsula with a few beaches. Getting to land from the cruiseship is by tender.

There is a small section for kids with floating fake icebergs to climb and water slides but they charge an admission fee. Flotation mattresses are also available for rent for those who just want to float in the ocean. There are also locals who help with getting beach chairs for you but they expect tips. So things here are a money grabber. The cruiseship did have optional tours for snorkelling, parasailing, waverunner and kayaking tours but we thought that they were overpriced. Most passengers just spent the day relaxing around the beaches. The area around Labadee was pleasant enough but the beaches and shores themselves were fairly rocky so wearing sandals in the water would be advised. Royal Caribbean had organized a beach BBQ at an outdoor picnic facility which was okay but nothing special. There is a market there consisting of two buildings. One is a store where the souveniers and items have marked prices and the other building is like your typical market where locals try to hustle you for business. The locals inside the market were aggressive but polite. If you don’t mind haggling, you could get some pretty good deals but if you dislike this type of pushy atmosphere, then you best avoid the market except for the fixed price store.

One big difference between this port compared to others is that since it is pretty well being used as a private beach, you will not be hassled by locals. The vendors coming around with drinks at the beach locations are actually Royal Caribbean staff so if one wishes to buy a drink, the cruiseship passcard is all that is required. As for concerns about being in Haiti given the poverty and political situation, Labadee was not a problem because the entire site is enclosed by a high steel fence. Other passengers later told us that they wandered off near the perimeter of the site and saw many Haitians along the fence begging for handouts and food. The fencing was mostly concealed in the distance from the main tourist areas.

We found Labadee in general to be a bit of a waste of time for us. The beaches were too rocky and we didn’t have access to inexpensive activities since everything was run by Royal Caribbean. If one wanted to just go lie on the beach all day and not much else, then Labadee would be a suitable place. For those who want to experience some culture, do water sports without going through the cruiseship, or shop duty free, Labadee would not be the place to go. We decided to stay on board the ship after the BBQ lunch for the rest of the afternoon.

I like Royal Caribbean and would definitely cruise with them again but would not want to go on an itinerary that included Labadee in the future.
