When I travel especially on business I want a place that’s easy to get to, easy to check in to, a room that works for me, and a few nice things to make me remember it and want to return. I like a smooth, comfortable surrounding. Although lots of flash or ornate architectural statements are sometimes nice, I want to relax and be able to feel like I can behave like I do at home. The Cupertino Inn in Cupertino, California, gets a 9 out of 10 – definitely worth returning to.
When we arrived at checkin, I had an interesting experience that falls into the category of behaving like I do at home. Two of the younger staff were trying to properly tie a necktie and they were having trouble with it. So I gave them a hand, as I’ve done with my sons over the years. So if you see a well-tied necktie at the Cupertino Inn, it just might be my work.
The location is great. Cupertino Inn is right off Highway 280 at the De Anza exit, with an easy return to the freeway and everything else in Silicon Valley. The building is visible from the freeway and the exit. My only problem with the arrival was that the hotel sign “Cupertino Inn” is a bit small, dimly lit and not on the side of the building facing the freeway. Parking was easy. Access to the front desk was a short walk, and check in was about as short as I’ve ever experienced. The room was also close at hand.
I’m 6′3″ and weigh 220 pounds so I rarely find a bathroom that fits me, but I had a nice surprise at this hotel Inn. Even though the shower nozzle was only about the height to wash from my waist down, the bathtub more than made up for it. I could actually sit comfortably in the tub. It was deep and it had a few Jacuzzi-style jets.
Our room came with a fireplace, comfortable chairs and a four poster bed. This was shaping up as excellent. Some of the small touches I like included hangers that hang on a bar like they do at home. The Inn has done it right – and there were plenty of them. Plus they had real glasses and everything seemed to work.
On the down side, one of the sliding closet doors had come off the track. But maybe this was a plus as I resorted to my at-home behavior and set it back on the track. They were short a waste basket in the bedroom but all else was fine.
I checked for a data port on the phone and didn’t see the obvious one, but when I asked about it they said they have wireless connections available with all the parts to hook up most computers. And there really was a hard-wired port if I wanted that.
The room has a VCR and the hotel has a very large selection of movies that you can borrow. And there’s an excellent mini bar, coffee maker, bath robes, and everything else one might want in a hotel.
SERVICES
The Cupertino Inn doesn’t have a restaurant but it does have a kitchen and it provides 24 hour room service. This would be especially nice if I had arrived after most restaurants (and the kitchen) had closed. There are numerous restaurants in the area – many within a short walk from the Inn.

Information about Ilkley
The English spa town of
Ilkley
is pleasantly situated in Lower Wharfedale on the edge of Ilkley Moor and the
Yorkshire Dales
National Park,
but yet lies within easy reach of the cities of Leeds and
Bradford.
As such Ilkley makes a great centre for visiting both cities and countryside of West Yorkshire, with plenty to see and do in the area.
Attractions in and around the town of Ilkley itself include Ilkley Moor (famous for the well known Yorkshire anthem of “On Ilkley Moor Baht’ at”
- which roughly translates as “On Ilkley Moor Without a Hat”!),
where can be found the Cow and Calf Rocks, the Rocky Valley, the prehistoric Swastika Stone and numerous other prehistoric cup and ring markings cut in to the rocks.
Also on the moors is the bath house of White Wells (which is actually Victorian but said to date back to Roman times),
while back in the town can be found the Ilkley Toy Museum, the famous Betty’s Cafe
and the Ilkley Lido (a large but unheated open air swimming pool which quite naturally is open during the summer months only.
Slightly further afield attractions include Bolton Priory and the the infamous Strid – a narrow and dangerous channel of water where the River Wharfe is channelled
between rocks only a few metres wide, the Embsay and Bolton Abbey Steam Railway
(where steam trains run from near the village of Bolton Abbey to Embsay), and the market town of Skipon (the “Gateway to the Dales”)
with its shops, cafes, pubs and medieval castle.
Ilkley has its own railway station, and with Leeds Bradford International Airport being situated close by Ilkley is well connected with the rest of the world
and is well worth a visit !
Vacationing with Children
Traveling with children will be a memorable event – the question is “What kind?” Your chances of a lifetime memory you will cherish increase significantly with some advance communication and preparation.
The book, Love It or Lose It: Living Clutter-Free Forever, outlines a five-step process you can apply to organizing any area of your life – including traveling with children of any age. Make the children a part of the trip by letting them help you plan. Your children will enjoy the trip more if they feel they have some say about the agenda. Get books from the library, or do an Internet search, on the area you plan to visit. Give them some options of what to do and actually use some of their suggestions. Who knows? You may enjoy their suggestions more than you think.
Here is a guide to vacationing with children, using the 5 steps:
1. Design your vision.
The first step to happy memories is good communication. Start scheduling family meetings to plan – the earlier the better. At the first meeting, ask each member of the family to describe what he or she would like to have in order to have a wildly successful vacation. It’s a great idea to put some structure into this discussion. Use a flip chart and have family members take turns recording answers. Subsequent meetings can be used to work out each of the next steps.
2. Eliminate your obstacles.
Mark Twain is credited with saying “Progress starts with the truth.” Certainly that applies in this situation. For example, some teens simply do not think it’s “cool” to travel with mom and dad. If you want your teens to enjoy their travel experience, make sure you understand what they like and dislike. With young children, keep in mind “less is more.” A swim in the hotel pool may be a much better choice than another two hours at the theme park.
3. Commit your time.
There could be several issues here. If your teens are working, they may resent having to miss work – or they may be delighted. In either case, find out their preferences, and see what you can do to accommodate them without jeopardizing your own needs. One of the issues likely to come up is the daily travel schedule itself. Young children need naps, teens may want to sleep late, while parents relish the idea of “getting an early start.” Compromise is probably the best solution here.
4. Select your tools
Growing up on a farm in Nebraska, one of the things my daddy taught me was “Half of any job is having the right tool.” While you may think it’s ridiculous to think about “tools” for a vacation, it is really essential. For example, if it is impossible to reach a compromise about the music on the car CD player, headphones for individual players could be a godsend!
Tools can also include systems for the way you handle situations. One of the major keys to success in organizing any activity is focusing on individual strengths – if one child is particularly adept at photography, make them the official family photographer, while another might be a great navigator.
5. Maintain your success
At the end of each day, take a few minutes for a “Check-In” session. What was the best thing that happened that day? Why? How can we make sure we have more like it? What didn’t work? Why? How can we eliminate the situation in the future? Make sure you use this process at the end of the vacation – make some notes and put them in your GO System File (LINK HERE to http://productiveenvironment.com/index.asp?name= GO%5FSEMINARS&new=true&leftnav=true&lid=66) for next year’s planning.
Here are some general tips you can use to ensure a great vacation:
• Choose age appropriate destinations. This doesn’t mean every trip has to involve a theme park or sports event; it simply means keep the trip’s educational value at a level they can comprehend and appreciate. If your children’s ages span a wide range, have at least one activity geared to each child. Picking a hotel with a pool can make a big difference!
• Lay the ground rules early. Before you even leave the house, make sure your children know what is and isn’t acceptable behavior on the road. As elementary as this may seem, if you don’t tell your children what you expect, how can they oblige?
• Let the children pack their own suitcases as much as possible. Make sure each child has a small carry-on bag for which they are responsible. Include things they can do on the road or in the air–a walkman and tapes, comic books, handheld video games, etc.
• Decide ahead of time about seating arrangements and make contingency plans in case requested seats are not available.
• Establish a meeting place at each stop. Nothing could be worse that having a child get lost in an unfamiliar environment. Whenever you visit a location, identify a spot where the family can meet if you happen to get separated, or carry cell phones or pagers.
• Carry current photos of your children. That way others can help you locate your lost child. If your child can tell time, make sure they take a watch!
• Pack a first aid kit. Face it. Kids will be kids. That means scraped knees, bug bites, and cuts and bruises. When traveling with children, always keep a first aid kit handy.
• Check for children travel specials. Pre-planning can save you lots of money. Many airlines, restaurants, and hotels offer discounts for children, whether it’s a “kids stay or eat free” deal or a “half-off children’s rate.” Let Internet-savvy children put their mouse to work for a happier vacation.
The most important thing to remember – flexibility. Traveling with children of any age is always a challenge. Spend more time enjoying the precious memories you will be creating and less time fretting over what could go wrong. Keep your sense of humor in full swing and happy traveling.

Getting over the Christmas Giving Blues? Take the Christmas Budget Challenge
With Christmas just around the corner, our focus is slowly starting to shift from our work commitments to Christmas and with it comes the annual Christmas spending spree.
Unfortunately many families don’t set a Christmas budget and they rely on their credit cards to get them through the festive season.
Shortly after Christmas these same families will also develop symptoms of the “Christmas Giving Blues” which can include an upset stomach, lack of sleep and anxiety.
You know that feeling. You spend up big, charge it on the card, and then spend the next couple of months worrying about how you are going to pay off your Christmas debts while vowing never to let this happen to you again.
Unfortunately, this is a reality for a lot of families every Christmas and they just don’t seem to be able to break out of the cycle.
This year, give yourself and your family a Christmas gift and take the “Christmas Budget Challenge” and enjoy your Christmas without the suffering the Christmas Blues.
There are two parts to the Christmas Budget Challenge:
1. Put in place a strategy that will help you survive Christmas with as little pain as possible.
2. Put in place a strategy that will give you a plan to enjoy your next Christmas. This plan will also run itself without you even thinking about it.
Let’s start by putting in place a plan that will hopefully make this Christmas a little easier on your hip pocket:
1. Have a look at your finances and set an upper limit that you can afford for your Christmas spending. Allocate a certain amount to Gifts and a certain amount to other Christmas expenses. This is the start of your Christmas budget.
2. Leave the credit card at home and pay for Christmas with money wherever possible.
3. Keep track of all your Christmas spending. A good way of doing this is by carrying a small notebook and pencil and writing your purchases in it.
Gift Buying
4. Call your relatives and agree that Gifts will only be purchased for the children
5. Take your Christmas Gift budget that was allocated in step 1 and divide it by the number of gifts you need to buy. This number will be the maximum you can spend on each gift.
Christmas Food Shopping
6. Take your Christmas Dinner budget and make a shopping list.
7. When you are doing your shopping use a calculator to make sure you stay within your Christmas budget.
8. Save money by looking for the cheaper priced goods on the top and bottom shelves. Try not to buy items that are on shelves at eye level, these are usually the higher priced items.
9. Try not to buy items that are located in the displays at the end of the shopping aisles, these items are usually more expensive than the items located in the aisles.
10. Compare prices of similar items and buy the cheaper item.
11. Remember that Christmas is only one day a year. You don’t have to spend a weeks worth of grocery money on one day.
12. Ask each relative to provide a food dish, drinks or dessert.
As soon as Christmas is over and the pain is fresh in your mind. You need to take action and put in place the second part of the “Christmas Budget Challenge”. This next step will ensure that you have enough money for next Christmas
1. Add up all your Christmas expenses including gifts, food and any other costs.
2. Take the total of your Christmas expenses and divide it by the total amount of pays until next Christmas.
3. Open high interest bank account with the following attributes:
- No minimum starting balance
- Interest is accrued daily and billed monthly
- Interest rate on this bank account must be higher than the inflation rate.
- No bank charges
ING Direct and Citibank have an online banking account that may be suitable for your Christmas Budget account.
4. Organize an automatic bank transfer from your bank account to your Christmas Budget account. This transfer will be on each payday for the amount you worked out in step 2. It is important that this is automated because most people will not stick to this plan if it is a manual process.
5. When next Christmas comes around withdraw your money and repeat the process again.
This plan is very simple and surprisingly effective and you will be able to enjoy your next Christmas without the suffering the Christmas Giving Blues.
