Microsoft to Give Browser Choice to Windows Users

In the wake of a legal agreement between Microsoft and Europe’s Competition in 2009, the Commission has forced the former to offer alternative browsing options to its users in Europe, effective March 1.

Computers with Windows XP, Windows 7 and Windows Vista will be automatically offered a software update which they can download and then choose from a range of web browsers as an alternate to the default Internet Explorer.

Rory Cellan-Jones, a BBC technology correspondent, commenting on this development in his blog says that it is a time of choice for European users. People who never thought about their browsers because they had no option, will now be faced with a wealth of choice. He also feels that this is a time for unique marketing opportunities for competitors of Microsoft. Players offering browsers like Safari, Google Chrome, Firefox, et al can now tempt the Internet Explorer users away.

Microsoft is being professional in offering user-friendly transition with clear instructions for downloading the other browsers. It has loaded previews on its blog with instructions on how to download the other browsers. After a user picks the browser he wants, a shortcut icon will appear on the screen for ease of access to the browser.
