How Does VOIP Work?
A relatively new arrival on the telephone call scene has been something called VoIP. Mostly likely you have heard of it but do you understand how it works? For those that continue to have the traditional phone in the house, VoIP might be worth learning about.
To start with VoIP stands for Voice over Internet Protocol. That made everything clearer now didn’t it? Basically, VoIP takes what are the analog sounds from your telephone and transforms them into digital sounds that can go across your internet connection.
So if you only have a sound card, a microphone, a computer and an internet connection, you can use those with VoIP to have a telephone connection via the internet. With VoIP, your conversation is compressed into what is called packets and transmitted to the receiver of your call. When the packets are combined, the person at the other end receives your conversation. With good quality systems, the lag between the sounds is close to minimal. For poorer systems the lag can be as much as 400ms.
When choosing a VoIP system, there are basically three options.
An ATA adapter – This analog telephone adapter allows you to connect your telephone to your computer. You can then use it with VoIP.
IP Phones – These are specialized phones that look traditional but have an Ethernet connector. They are connected to your router where they are then able to handle all calls from there.
Computer to Computer – With this type of system you do not pay for long distance calls. Here is where the sound card, mic and computer with internet connection come into play. You can connect directly to others through your cable of DSL modem. Simply install the VoIP software on your computer and you can connect to those that have this installed as well. With this model, there are no additional charges since you are already paying for internet service.
Learning how does VoIP work is not that complicated. It’s basically using the internet to make telephone calls. However, finding and choosing the correct system for your needs may take a bit more time. VoIP is an additional way for utilizing your internet connection and saving some money along the way.
